Perception is everything in business, which is why it's important to project your best image. The quieter you are, the louder your body language. Something as simple as how you sit or stand, or where your eyes land during a conversation with a client or boss, can have a profound effect on how people perceive and respond to you.
how your actions may be perceived
Your actions are open to all sorts of interpretation and misinterpretation. If you arrive at an event and sit in the corner, it's probably because you're nervous. But it could be perceived by others as disinterest or arrogance. In a staff meeting, if you close your eyes to think, you may appear bored. Different attitudes are conveyed in different ways. Check whether you are coming across as:
defensive. You might have crossed arms and/or legs, a tightly closed mouth, and clenched jaw. Your eyes could be averted, and you are probably taking small, quick breaths.
embarrassed. You have a nervous laugh, or avoid eye contact, and often turn away, or if you have a flushed face, you might appear embarassed.
nervous or fearful. You are fidgeting, with a lack of focus and nail biting. You are holding your breath, with your eyes darting. You have a rigid or stiff body.
secretive. You keep your distance. Your shoulders are hunched and you have a set jaw. You use a brief, mechanical handshake with downcast eyes.
